If you are anything like me, you would rather air on the side of caution when it comes to those we love. Whether in human or in animal form, safety before trial. I will always have pets in my home and they will always be cared for first with natural products, such as essential oils and supplements. Knowing what and how to use them, and for what body areas to support, is the key. Here is your guide in keeping them naturally well.

The 3 ways to use oils for your pets

Topically: 1-2 drops (diluted in fractionated coconut oil) is plenty for any pet. 1 drop for a smaller dog and cats. 2 drops for larger dogs. Put the oils in the palm of your hand and rub them together, then simply pet your animal. With cats, allow the oils to absorb longer on your hands before petting them. If needed for targeting health, pet your animal where support is needed, ie their belly, joints, etc.  Small, frequent doses are best. Overall support can be applied to their paws, top of neck and back.

Aromatically: Using an ultasonic water based diffuser will break the oil particals up so small that you and your pet will not only receive the benefit of the aroma, but as well, you will recieve the benefit of the desired oil chosen. ie Lavender, Roman Chamomile, Cedarwood, etc. has known scentific calming benefits, especially when inhaled.

Internally: Using the oils orally is an effective way to support your dog. It is NOT recommended for cats to use essential oils orally, as they metabolize oils differently than dogs and people do. A very simple way to add essential oils to your dogs diet is to add it to their food &/or water (if cats do not have access to it). I love using Frankincense and Copaiba in their food and a few drops of Lemon oil in their water. If my dogs immune system is compromised, I add On Guard in their water as well. You can even put a drop or two into an empty veggie capsule filling the rest with fractionated coconut oil and hide it into their moist dog treats. Pro tip; I use pocket pouch treats.

The no-no's: Never use essential oils directly in your pets eyes or ears. If oil accidentally gets into these sensitive areas, DO NOT use water, but instead you want to flush the area with fractionated coconut oil or olive oil immediately.

Can you diffuse around cats?

The short answer is YES! With that, there are certain oils such as Tea Tree that can be dangerous to your cat IF injested, used topically in large quanties undiluted and/or diffused while locked in a small room with no option for escape. Though there are so many reasons why you would want to diffuse essential oils around your pets. Here are the safety precautions to be sure you are always following with any pet:

1. Pay attention to how your pet responds to certain essential oils. If they are responding negatively, keep that particular oil in a room with better ventalation.

2. Never leave a diffuer running in the same space as your pet without an option for them to leave the room.

3. Use common sense.
